The University of Hawaii’s bats woke up a little bit, but not enough to avoid another loss on the road.
Connor Little coughed up four runs in the first inning Friday and Cal Poly beat the Warriors 8-3 in the series opener in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Piikea Kitamura hit a two-run single in the third as the Warriors (7-23, 2-5 Big West) managed to equal the combined run production from their four previous games. But UH fell to 0-5 in on its California road trip and has lost sixth straight overall.
Nick Torres provided the big blow for the Mustangs (23-8, 5-2) with a three-run home run in the first inning.
Joey Wagman (7-2) pitched a complete game and struck out eight.
Hawaii ‘s Kaeo Aliviado was 2 for 4 and scored on Kalei Hanawahine’s pinch-hit RBI triple in the sixth to cut the lead to 6-3. Austin Wobrock also went 2 for 4.
Little fell to 1-5. In six innings, he allowed seven hits, six runs — four earned — and walk with five strikeouts.
Cal Poly finished with 11 hits. Denver Chavez was 3 for 5 with two runs scored, Jimmy Allen had a pair of RBI singles, and Tim Wise and Mark Mathias each had two hits and drove in a run.
Wagman allowed only an earned run, scattering eight hits.
The teams continue the three-game series at 3 p.m. HST today.
